The opiate class of drugs includes heroin and morphine, both of which are derived from the resin of the opium poppy.

Heroin is quickly metabolized to morphine. Thus, morphine and morphine glucuronide may be found in the urine of a person who has only taken heroin.

The body also changes codeine to morphine. Thus, the presence of morphine (or its metabolite, morphine glucuronide) in urine may indicate heroin, morphine and/or codeine use. Therefore, positive test results do not necessarily drug abuse, as legally prescribed medications such as codeine will also test positive for opiates.
